Union County Supervisors meeting, May 16, 2016

New Albany, MS- Building a new bridge on County Road 171 at Highway 9 was the lead item on the county board agenda Monday morning, May 16th.

The Union County supervisors accepted the bid by Prairie Construction Company, which bid $564-thousand to build the new bridge in the Alpine community. Mississippi state road aid funds are expected to cover the cost of building the new bridge.

The supervisors approved the re-appointment of Ray Collins to the GM&O (Tanglefoot Trail) board of directors. Collins is the current president of the board that operates the bike and hiking trail, which runs from downtown New Albany 41-miles south to Houston, Mississippi.

The board approved writing a manual check to Scruggs Equipment Company of Tupelo for three new tractors.

The board approved the transfer of $10,000 remaining in the Duke/Enron Fund to the county general fund. Enron abandoned a plan to build a new power generating plant in Union County in 2001. It was during 2001 that Enron collapsed in the midst of one of the largest corporate financial scandals in U. S. history. Contractors removed several large items of equipment from the plant site more than a year ago.

The Board of Supervisors signed off on the appointments of New Albany attorneys Mason Wages and Anna Kate Robbins as public defenders in circuit court, youth court and justice court.

The county board will meet again at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 23rd.
