Riverfest Friday

The weather was perfect — temperatures in the mid to upper 60s and no mosquitoes — during the Riverfest Friday night musical entertainment.

At 7:30 p.m.,Terry “Harmonica” Bean was the first performer on the Riverview Stage in New Albany’s Park-Along-The-River. Now in his mid 50s, Bean has been a Mississippi blues man since he was a teenager playing music with his family in Pontotoc County.

Bean has performed around the world. He has released seven albums since 2001, and appeared in three film documentaries about the Blues. He’s a one-man band, simultaneously singing and playing guitar and harmonica.

“The Wayward Kin, an outlaw country band from Tupelo, was Friday night’s feature act, performing mostly songs they had written including “The Sound and the Fury” and “The Ghost of Emmitt Till.”

“Diamond Rio” will the featured musical entertainment on the Riverview Stage Saturday night. They are considered an American country and Christian country music band, and have multiple gold and platinum albums to their credit.

The group was formed in 1982 as an attraction for the Opryland USA theme park in Nashville. They were first known as the “Grizzly River Boys,” then as the “Tennessee River Boys.” In 1991 the band took the name “Diamond Rio” and released “Meet in the Middle,” a song that went to the number one position on the “Billboard Hot Country Songs” charted. “Diamond Rio” has had four more Billboard number one hits.

The Riverfest continues Saturday, kicking off with the Tallahatchie Fun Run and the 5K fun at 8:00 AM. There will be music, street vendors, the Rubber Duck Regatta, a pet parade, and a special activities for kids, including the Toyota”Build Your Future” area…plus lots more family fun. Don’t forget to bring your chairs!
