Oleta Perkinson Shiverdecker
(June 11, 1924 – July 5, 2017)
Oleta Margaret Perkinson Shiverdecker, died Wednesday, July 5, 2017, in New Albany, Mississippi. She was 93 years old.
She was born June 11, 1924, in Wellsville, Montgomery County, Missouri, but raised from infancy in the Toledo community of eastern Callaway County. Her parents were Oather Perkinson and Maggie Frey Perkinson. Both her parental families moved to Callaway County in the 1860s, shortly after the American Civil War. The Perkinsons came from Kentucky and the Freys from Pennsylvania.
She is survived by one son, Jerry Shiverdecker, of New Albany and his wife Nan. She is also survived by two granddaughters, Elizabeth Shiverdecker, of Athens, Greece, and Renee LaSalle, of Savannah, Georgia, and a grandson, Roger LaSalle, of Beaufort, South Carolina. A favorite sister-in-law, Bonnie Guerrant Shiverdecker, lives in Fulton, Missouri.
George Shiverdecker, her husband of 62 years, died in Fulton, Missouri, in 2008. Her daughter, Jan Lasalle, died in Bucyrus, Ohio, in 2010. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Oather K. Perkinson. Her husband was from a Callaway County farm family of 12 children. All of his 11 siblings and all but one of their spouses pre-deceased her.
The first of her husband’s family moved from Tennessee to the eastern part of the county in 1816, four years before Callaway County was organized on November 25, 1820, and five years before Missouri statehood in 1821. Thus, she has innumerable extended family in Callaway County and elsewhere.
She moved to Mississippi to live with her son and his family following the death of her husband, becoming the “adopted matriarch” of their large family in Mississippi. For the past two years, she resided at Magnolia Place assisted living in New Albany. Her family is most grateful for the loving care she received during her stays at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union County, during her time at Magnolia Place and, during her final days, by Legacy Hospice. Her family is also thankful for the care and continuing friendship given her and them by Cathy Cannon, of New Albany.
Debo Funeral Home of Fulton, Missouri, was in charge of the services on Monday, July 10, 2017. Burial was private.
