This baby llama was born yesterday at Magnolia Knoll, Sandy and Nat Shaddinger's farm on Martintown Road. It's dam is Bella. The father is Critical Mass. It is believed to be the first llama ever bred and born in Union County. The baby has not yet been named. Their birth weight is typically about 25 pounds after a gestation of 350 days. They stand, walk and suckle within an hour of birth. In this photo Bella may be "humming" to her hours-old baby, which is part of their bonding ritual.

That noise you're hearing in the air is the sound of sex. From cicadas, but not the same ones we hear every summer evening, year in and year out. This is Brood 23 of the 13-year cicada. Nymphs have emerged from underground tree roots, shed their shells and climbed into the trees to seek a mate. Males woo via a loud song (noise!) using body parts called "tymbals." The sound is loud enough to damage human hearing if you are too close for too long. There are three different broods of 13-year cicadas; MS is the only state lucky enough to harbor all three. Next emergence: Brood 19 in 2024.
