Loyce Reed Purvis, 93, passed away peacefully Wednesday, November 7 at Magnolia Personal Care Home in New Albany. A celebration of her life will be 2 p.m., Saturday, November 10 at Hillcrest Baptist Church, New Albany. Visitation will be at the church, 12 until 2 p.m. preceding the service. Burial will be at Vista Memorial Gardens.

Born September 15, 1925, in Tippah County, she is the daughter of Otis and Vera Caviness Reed. She graduated from Palmer High School, where she was an all-star basketball player. During World War 2, Loyce and her twin sister, Cloyce, served as “Rosie The Riveters” in a Memphis aircraft facility. She married Enoch in Blue Mountain, July 4, 1946. Following his call to pastoral ministry, she faithfully served alongside, assisting in a variety of church ministries, and was instrumental in their nursing home ministry. She obviously loved people, demonstrated by her presence in their lives.

A member of Hillcrest Baptist Church, she served faithfully as a Sunday School and VBS teacher, member of the senior adult choir, senior adult fashion team, pastor search & building committees, along with a variety of other roles as requested. She was a mentor to many.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Enoch Purvis; her son, Michael Purvis and granddaughter Stacey Purvis. She is survived by two children, Tommy Purvis and Judy Mengel, 8 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and her sister Charlotte Shanks.

  1. A great Christian and a mighty soul in the army of the Lord!
    Loyal to her family and to her church! She and the Reverend were vital members of the American Legion! They now serve the Lord in heaven. Eternal peace.
