Lola Irene Thompson Tohill
February 16, 1940 – November 17, 2018
Lola Irene Thompson Tohill, 78, passed away on Saturday, November 17, 2018 surrounded by her family. She was born on February 16, 1940 to Lola McWhirter Thompson and B. J. Thompson in New Albany.
Irene graduated from New Albany High School as Valedictorian and attended MSCW before graduating from Ole Miss. She had an unconditional love for all children with a teaching career spanning thirty-four years. She was twice named Teacher of the Year.
She was most recently a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church. Previously, she gave generously of her time to Calvary UMC, Hickory Flat UMC, Winborn UMC and Glenfield UMC by serving as a Sunday School teacher and Bible School leader. She made sure that many children were able to attend Camp Lake Stephens throughout the years. Irene perfected her mother’s caramel cake recipe which was in high demand at church bake sales. Her love of plants and flowers led her to become a master gardener. She adored her grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11:00a.m. Monday, November 19, 2018 at Bethlehem United Methodist Church with Dr. Jeff Lawrence officiating. A graveside service will be at 2:30p.m. Monday at Magnolia Cemetery in Batesville. United Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Brownie Tohill. When Brownie began his second career as a pastor, Irene was instrumental in his success by preparing church bulletins, playing the piano and anything else that was needed.
She is also survived by her daughter, Ann Tohill and her fiance’ Paul Badowski of Savannah, GA; her son Charlie Tohill and his wife, Janet Tohill of New Albany; one sister, Bonnie Moore of Virginia Beach, VA; one brother, Mac Thompson of New Albany; six grandchildren: Amanda Cox, Tyler Gibson, Janna Tohill, Ryan Smith, Dylan Smith and Madelyn Smith; two great grandchildren, Maggie and Mina Cox; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Ryan Smith, Dylan Smith, Tyler Gibson, Blake Thompson, Jason Moore and David Moore.
Honorary pallbearers will be Bob Clement, Eddie Smith, Ben Benson, Jim Jennings, Wayne Stanton, Warner Bradford and Gerald Bogue.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or Bethlehem United Methodist Church.
Visitation will be at 5:30p.m. on Sunday, November 18, 2018 at Bethlehem United Methodist Church.
