June 21, 1925 – November 27, 2018
Oxford—With the passing of Gladys Wilbanks Spencer on Tuesday, November 27, 2018, at Elmcroft Assisted Living in Oxford, MS, one of the true saints went home to be with her Lord. She was born June 21, 1925, in Hickory Flat to Andrew Calvin Wilbanks and Ora Lee Whiteside Wilbanks. She was a member of Bethlehem Methodist Church. All who knew Gladys loved her, as they recognized the goodness she exhibited through her love and caring of others, always willing to share her love, comfort, and caring.
Gladys shared 67 years of marriage with the love of her life, Rev. Edwin Spencer, who pastored United Methodist churches over North Mississippi. She shared his ministry, but also had one of her own. Whenever Edd had to be absent from the pulpit, Gladys could actually deliver a sermon to equal any. She sang in the choir and blessed many by her musical voice offered in praise and Thanksgiving. In the 30s she and her siblings sang on the radio.
As a mother and grandmother, Gladys offered unconditional love, which was returned many times over. She loved to cook for her loved ones, and her meals were legendary among family. Holidays will never be the same without her happy smile and laughter, which was contagious. The legacy she has left all her family is one of love and kindness, a true blessing.
After losing her husband, the last 8 1/2 years of her life have been spent at Elmcroft Assisted Living in Oxford, where she was loved and cherished by residents and staff alike. As she gave, she received. We thank her friends and caring staff for making her senior years enjoyable. The family could not have asked for better care anywhere.
With sadness her family must say goodbye for now, but there is no doubt we will meet again at the river, where she and Edd are rejoicing now.
Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, December 2, 2018, at Bethlehem Methodist Church with Bro. Jeff Lawrence, Rev. Bobby Whiteside, and Sam Davis officiating. Burial will be in Glenfield Memorial Park. United Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.
