Blues Doctors, Cakewalkers to perform at Literary Fest September 24th
New Albany, MS– Do you like harmonica and the modern Blues? Well, get ready for a treat. The Blues Doctors will perform on the Biscuits & Jam stage Saturday, September 24th, at the Literary Fest in New Albany during the Fire on the River presentation.
Adam Gussow and Alan Gross, a.k.a. the Blues Doctors, are Mississippi-based blues veterans who play a mix of down-home Delta standards and urban grooves from the Texas to Chicago axis, with some New Orleans funk thrown in for good measure. With Gussow on harmonica and drums and Gross playing guitar, they produce a full band sound. The “doctors” share the vocals.
Harmonica doctor, Adam Gussow is part of the Hill County Harmonica events and has recorded several albums: Kick and Stomp, Harlem Blues, Mother Mojo, and Rattle and Hum. He teams up with “doctor” Gross on Roosters Happy Hour. Additionally, Gussow can be seen and heard in commercials for Coca Cola, Nestea and Swatch.
Gussow, along with teaching at Ole Miss, is a native of New York and a graduate of Princeton. He has played with many of the old blues greats and is the author of several books, including Seems Like Murder Here: Southern Violence and the Blues Tradition.
In addition to the Blues Doctors, the well-known Oxford group, the Cakewalkers, will also perform during Fire on the River. The Cakewalkers bill themselves as being of the “Mississippi Skiffle” genre; count on them for a brand of Southern Americana.
During the performance of the Cakewalkers, there will be an actual cakewalk–a fun tradition for all the family.
