Billy Joe Farr

November 23, 1939 – August 28, 2018

Billy Joe Farr, 78, passed away peacefully Tuesday, August 28, 2018, at Baptist Memorial Hospital North Mississippi in Oxford surrounded by his loving family. He was born November 23, 1939, to Boyd and Clara Lee Farr in Macedonia. He entered the Army in 1957 and served in telecommunications during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He attended Mississippi State University and graduated with a BS degree in Agriculture. After graduation he returned home to open a dairy with his father, which together they operated for many years, along with crop farming. During this time he served as general manager of Union Grain Company in New Albany. He was also an algebra teacher for Ashland High School and had been a member of the Masonic Lodge. He was a lifelong member of Cornersville Baptist Church where he served as a deacon for many years until his health declined.

He was a generous and compassionate man, always sharing what he could from the dairy to those in need. He loved the Lord and always saw the good in everyone. He enjoyed debates over politics and other issues and always had great respect for others’ opinions.

Billy had a favorite Bible verse: Luke 6:31—‘Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.’ He lived this out his entire life and we are all better for having known him.

Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday, August 31, at United Funeral Service with Rev. John McMullen and Rev. Joe Epting officiating. Burial will be in Cornersville Cemetery. United Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.

He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Hattie Lou Farr. Together they raised three children who also survive: a daughter: Christy Johnston (RJ) of Destin, FL; and two sons: Steven Farr and Joey Farr, both of Macedonia. He is also survived by a sister: Kay Russell of Macedonia; four grandchildren: Leah Smith (Taylor) of Myrtle, Kaylee Parks (Larry) of New Albany, Cassie Farr of Myrtle, and Gage Johnston of Destin, FL.; two great-grandchildren: Liam Parks and Greyson Smith; several special nieces and nephews: David Farr, Tracy Clark, Kim Farr, and Lorie Farr Bass; along with many cousins who frequently visited and supported him in the years his health continued to decline.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister: Sarah Farr; and two brothers: Booker Farr and Bobby Farr.

Pallbearers will be David Farr, Brad Farr, Ernie Fuller, Heath Clark, Trent Clark, and Dr. R. J. Johnston. Honorary pallbearers will be Ray Boatner, Gary Swain, and Jack Greer.

Visitation will be from 5:00-9:00 p.m. Thursday, August 30, 2018, at United.
